We got to chat with the RV park host a bit this morning and he gave us a few pointers about our destination of Chicken, AK, as well as a few other things.
One thing he told us about is the option to fly with a guy who takes mail to remote places daily. That sparked Jeff's interest (definitely NOT mine) and he made a phone call right away and found out the guy was headed to drop off mail in Chicken in two hours! (Bennett and I thought it was a neat idea but didn't really want to do this, but B did change his mind and decide to go with Jeff). Ry and I drove to Chicken and met them down the road from the airport (a grass landing strip with area for planes).
While Ry and I got bored, talked, searched for music we never downloaded, and played the ABC game for almost 2 hours, Jeff and Bennett got a 30 minute flight to deliver mail! Although there wasn't much to see besides a few lakes, trees, and mountains, they had a blast!
Just for funsies, here is a portion of the drive...
Once we all met back up we explored Chicken. And were done in 5 minutes! Just kidding....but we could have been! Chicken is the original gold mining community prior to the gold rush and there are people who still come to pan/dredge for gold today.
Chicken Gold Camp is an RV park/store/site of where they brought in a historic gold dredge. We found some delicious chocolate chip cookies and walked around the store before we explored the dredge area.
Then we went to Downtown Chicken--see pic below. One store. One bar. One cafe. Good stuff though! A little chicken history too.
Wanting to make sure we didn't miss anything in Chicken we headed to the 2nd RV park/store. There we were given pans and told to try our luck in the river for some gold. So we did. We had no luck, but enjoyed the task!
Here lies Bennett-he got bored....
Chicken Gold Camp does wood-fired pizza only on Thursday evenings and I'd signed us up for that before we left Tok this morning (places this remote have to plan accordingly), so we headed back to place our order. A drink for Mom and dad, looking through pics of the trip so far, and some yummy pizza was a great end to our slow day in Chicken.
Then, just before heading back to Tok, we saw an area we hadn't visited yet and got to see more parts of a dredge. God forbid we miss anything!
