I'd read that Soldotna, a city about halfway between our campsite and Homer, had a market with food trucks and music on Wednesdays during the summer and really wanted to go bu it wasn't on our agenda. However....guess what we drove right by? That's right --the market! We stopped for about 30 minutes --just enough time to look around and then find some cute Alaska shirts. The lady we bought them from ended up being from TX(Willis) so of course we became fast friends!
Continuing our drive to Homer, we passed several cities that had Russian names. I don't know the history of this area, but obviously Alaska and Russia are close so it makes sense! We saw a beautiful lighthouse on a hill and wanted to go back to it, but ended up bypassing it since we stayed so long in Homer!
Homer is on Prince William Sound, which is the same area we were in for Valdez, Seward, and Whittier. We found a delicious place for lunch, owned by another Texan! He was originally from El Paso so we became fast friends with him too! If You're ever in Homer, definitely visit Fat Olives you want some yummy food! (And if you like balsamic vinaigrette like me, order something with it!!)
We spent our time on Homer Spit--a natural land formation hitting off land (a peninsula -ish piece of land).
First we checked out the boats to see if any halibut was being off-loaded (it wasn't). Then we found an area we coud see the boats travel from the marina. Saw a Coast Guard boat so I had to get a pic of it. The buoys in the background were like the ones Jeff cleaned when he was first in the Coast Guard! He always talk about cleaning those things! The water is so clear I was amazed you could see the barnacles on the boats--not sure why, but I was fascinated by this!
Checking out other people's boats caused us to be snackish, so it was time for some ice cream! I hadn't eaten rainbow sherbet in forever but after seeing some kids with it I had to have it! Delish!
A walk on the rocky beach was next and we found some great driftwood and seaweed, as well as some swings underneath the boardwalk for fun!
The mountains are always beautiful. I feel like we are always pointing out one for somebody to look at!
Next up: fishing day!
