We got out of Texas and New Mexico with Riley still asleep. He woke up right after the Colorado border since we only drove through a tiny nugget of NM.
Colorado went well until the outskirts of Denver. I remember getting stuck in Denver traffic (in a storm) in 2019 when we went to Rocky Mountain NP, but this was worse! It added around 1.5 hours to our trip. At the time we were going through it, Jeff hadn't really stopped driving since we started at about 7:30 am, so he was getting tired.
We finally got to a rest stop area near Fort Collins so Jeff could rest. He passed out probably before the boys and I could get out out of the coach to wander around! We piddled around to see what was there and then wandered a bit more to get out some energy! Rolling down hills is always an option for my 2!
At this rest stop there was a natural area that had a half mile hike to a restored "cap" -- the top portion of an old fire lookout tower. The boys and I hiked to it, read about it, took a pic, and headed back in time to have Jeff wake up ready to move on! This "cap" was 14 x 14 and was where the scouts would basically live as they were on duty. A helicopter moved this piece to it's position now from 26 miles west of Fort Collins. (And this began AND concluded the educational portion of the day!)
Our original plan was to hit Laramie, WY but we made it there around 3:45pm--WAY too early to stop for the day. We continued on to Rock springs, WY for another luxurious boondocking night at a truck stop! (The Walmart was on the opposite side of town from where we needed to head for Day 3, so it got bypassed!) Due to construction we added an additional 45 minutes to our evening, which definitely put us over the exhaustion limit.
Bad news: that construction traffic must have put every tricker at their limit so there were no luxurious spots available, so we had to drive another 30+ minutes to one in Farson.
Exciting news: I drove the coach for the 1st time!!! It was when we were going 5 MPH in traffic but I did get up to 35 MPH and got very nervous!! We are SO extremely lucky to have our driver Jeff! He did get a few work emails done though while I drove so that was a plus!!
