Specifically, motherhood when it comes to dealing with a puking toddler! Due to some events this week, B got sick all over me and I realized I have changed drastically from just a over year ago when I definitely wouldn've have reacted this way! Just in case any of you are wondering, here are the steps to successfully dealing with toddler vomit:
- When sitting with said toddler in your lap, make sure you keep your legs closed COMPLETELY! Doing this will prevent any extra "spillage" from slipping between your legs and getting onto the chair/couch/etc.--which is another clean-up in itself. So in reality, this move will save you time and frustration later on!
- Make NO shouting noises when the instance happens. This will ensure that said toddler only freaks out at themselves, not you going, "Oh, oh, ah, ah, NO!" or whatever happens to come out at that time!
- DO NOT run downstairs while holding a messy toddler and try to get your husband who's outside mowing. You will realize that not only are you literally dripping all over the place, but the dogs waiting at the back door will have a feast if you step outside!
- DO immediately take yourself and said toddler to the restroom--even if that's where you just came from since it was just bathtime! It's okay to put the toddler in the empty bathtub at this time while you strip down to your socks and quickly get the puked up green bean out of your bra! If toddler cries, just let them know that you're going as quickly as the gross-ness allows!
- DO immediately then take care of the toddler, making sure you pull the pjs off in a way that won't make the vomit cross their face (this is an important step b/c it again makes one less clean-up for you!).
- Now here's where you may vary from me. I gave said toddler a little sip of water so he could wash the vomit taste away, and I gave him his toothbrush to help too! Yes, I know a one year old can't get the nasty to go away like adults can, but I still felt better b/c at least he wasn't tasting gross-ness the whole night!
- DO quickly try to get said exhausted toddler back to "relaxed and ready for bed" state by snuggling, reading a book, sshhhing, etc.--whatever you would normally do.
- DO say a quick prayer that while walking downstairs in only your socks that no neighbor happens to stop by and catch you streaking by the front door! Go quickly to the laundry room to start your new load of laundry and then take yourself straight to the shower!
